A racing game wants you to beat something. A driving game just wants you to drive, and those are not the same activity even though every list treats them as one.

If you want driving games unblocked with no opponent and no lap time, the short answer is Slow Roads for a scenic road that never ends, Crazy Cars or Madalin Stunt Cars 3 for an open map with nothing to complete, and Vortelli's Pizza Delivery or City Cab Rush if you would rather have a job to do while you drive. All free, all in a browser.

Slow Roads

The purest one here and the reason this page exists. A road and a landscape are generated in front of you forever, and you drive down it. No score, no timer, no opponents, no destination, nothing to unlock.

You choose the weather, the season and the time of day, and a car, a motorbike or a coach. If you would rather just look out of the window there is an autodrive that steers while you keep your hands off it entirely.

It was made by one person, Anslo, as an experiment in generating scenery, and he has said the browser version stays free and ad free. There is a paid version planned with extra features, but the web one is not going away.

Getting the most out of it: the settings are worth two minutes of your time before you start. Turning the time of day to dusk and the weather to fog changes the whole thing, and the road style setting decides whether you get mountain switchbacks or long open highway. If you want switchbacks, that is the mountain setting rather than a matter of luck.

Best bit: it is the best-looking thing in this whole niche by a distance. Worst bit: it is also the heaviest. See the machine notes below before you decide it is broken. Crazy Cars

An open world with tracks and obstacles scattered through it, stars to collect if you want a reason to go somewhere, and eight race tracks you can enter or ignore completely. Most people drive around for a while and then find a ramp.

The thing that makes it worth listing separately: it has a splitscreen mode, so two people can play on one keyboard. That is genuinely rare in a browser and it is the answer whenever somebody wants to play with a friend sitting next to them rather than online.

Best bit: the only true two-player game on this page. Worst bit: it is a bit rougher than the others to look at.

Madalin Stunt Cars 3

Around sixty cars unlocked from the start, three large maps built out of ramps, loops, tunnels and long runways, and nothing at all to complete. Most people treat it as a place rather than a game, which is exactly the point of this page.

Made by Madalin Games, who state it is only meant to exist on their own three addresses. It is desktop only, so there is no point opening it on a phone.

Best bit: the cars are the best-looking in the browser and every one of them is available immediately. Worst bit: desktop only, and heavy. Controls: WASD or arrows, space handbrake, F nitro, C camera, R respawn, T for the overhead map.

Drive, with a job to do

Vortelli's Pizza Delivery

An open city, a car, and pizzas to take places. Delivering quickly earns better tips, so there is pressure if you want it, but nothing stops you ignoring the order entirely and driving around instead. A lot of people do exactly that, and the game is fine with it.

Made by Devortel, a two-person team, and it was played six million times in its first month, which for a browser game is enormous.

Best bit: the city is big enough to be worth learning, and unlocking new cars and new districts gives the driving somewhere to go. Worst bit: the tutorial deliveries take a while before it opens up. Controls: WASD or arrows to drive, space to deliver the pizza, shift to drift.

City Cab Rush

The same idea with a clock on it. A low-poly city, passengers waiting on corners, and a timer running while you get them where they are going. Fares buy upgrades to your cab, mostly capacity, so later runs carry more people at once.

The clock makes this the most pressured game on the page, which is why it is here with that noted rather than left out. If you want none of that, Slow Roads is above.

And one that is the opposite

Drift Fever

Being straight about this one: Drift Fever is ours, and it is not a cruising game. It is the exact thing the rest of this page is avoiding. There is a score, it is moving every second, and the run ends.

It is here because it is free, it is already on the page, and it takes two minutes, which makes it a reasonable thing to do while a heavier game loads in another tab. There is a new track every day and everyone in the world drives the same one, your last run comes back as a ghost car, and the scoring rewards how close to the edge you can hold a slide rather than how far you got.

If what you actually wanted was a quiet drive with no numbers on the screen, close this and open Slow Roads. That is a real recommendation and not a modest one.

One thing it does have that fits this page better than the rest of it does: four music tracks written for the game, playing as a playlist. Slow Roads tells you to put your own music on, which is a fair answer. This one brings its own. They start when the game does, so headphones or the volume down if you are somewhere quiet.

Controls: left and right arrow keys, or the left and right halves of the screen on a phone.

Which of these will run

On an older laptop: the Poki ones are the safe bets, and City Cab Rush is the lightest of them. Slow Roads and the Madalin maps are the heavy end, because both are full 3D running inside the browser.

Fixing Slow Roads before giving up on it: open the settings and drop the graphics quality, then close your other tabs. It starts higher than an old machine can manage, and most people who say it does not work have never changed that setting. If it still stutters on the lowest setting, the machine does not have the graphics chip for it.

On a phone: Vortelli's, City Cab Rush, Crazy Cars and Drift Fever are all fine. Slow Roads has touch controls but wants a reasonably recent phone. Madalin does not run on phones at all.

Loading: give the 3D ones a minute before assuming they have failed. A blank screen while a 3D engine loads is normal.

How much time each one needs

Worth thinking about before you start something. Slow Roads and Madalin have no natural stopping point, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on how long you have. Vortelli's breaks into deliveries of a minute or two. City Cab Rush runs in short timed shifts. Drift Fever is two minutes a go.

If you have five minutes, the delivery games and Drift Fever fit it. If you have twenty and nothing to do with them, Slow Roads is the one.
