Car games unblocked: six kinds, and one you can play here

There are six kinds of car game and most lists mix them together. The short version: Drive Mad for physics puzzles, Eggy Car for balance, PolyTrack for time trials, Smash Karts for playing against other people, Madalin Stunt Cars 3 for free roam, and Slow Roads for driving with no score at all. Every one of them is free, runs in a browser tab with nothing to install, and is linked below to the page it actually comes from.

The six kinds at a glance

The one on this page: Drift Fever

Drift Fever is ours, so weigh the description accordingly. It is a drift racing game built as one file, which is why it starts the moment the page loads instead of showing you a bar.

The part worth knowing is the scoring. You do not score for distance. You score for how sideways you are and how close to the edge you can hold it, so the tidy, safe line is the one that pays least. Getting a wheel onto the edge does not end your run either. It scrapes, which costs you the chain rather than the go.

There is a new track every day and everyone in the world drives the same one, so a score means something next to somebody else's. Your last run comes back as a ghost car you can see and overtake.

Controls: left and right arrow keys, or hold the left or right half of the screen on a phone. Nothing else.

It has its own soundtrack, four tracks written for the game rather than borrowed from anywhere, running as a playlist. They start when the game does, so headphones or the volume down if you are somewhere quiet.

It is free, there is no account, and there is nothing to buy. It is also small. If what you want is a garage of cars to tune, Drift Hunters on the drift games page is a better use of your break than this.

Physics puzzles: Drive Mad

You cannot steer in Drive Mad. You get a throttle, a brake, and a course made of ramps, loops and things designed to put you on your roof. Getting to the end is a puzzle about how much speed to carry, and the answer is usually less than you think.

It was made by Martin Magni, who built it on his own Fancade platform first, and it has been played hundreds of millions of times. There are around a hundred levels and they stay fair the whole way. When you fail, it is because you were too fast, and you know it.

Good for: short attempts. A level takes under a minute and restarting is instant. Not good for: anyone who wants to actually drive. You are aiming a vehicle more than steering one. Controls: right arrow to go forward, left arrow to reverse. That is everything.

Balance: Eggy Car

An egg sits on the roof of your car and the road is made of hills. Change speed too suddenly and the egg rolls off and the run is over. There is no finish line, only distance.

Made by Beedo Games and out since 2019. Coins along the way unlock more cars, and there is a freeze power-up that holds the egg still for a few seconds.

Eggy Car is on this list because it rewards the opposite skill to everything else here. Being quick loses. Feathering the throttle up a slope, holding a steady speed over a crest and easing off before the downhill is what wins, and almost no other browser game asks for that.

Good for: calming down. It is slow and it is tense. Not good for: people who want reactions and speed. Controls: D or right arrow to accelerate, A or left arrow to brake and reverse.

Time trials: PolyTrack

Low-poly tracks with loops, jumps and long straights, and a clock measured in hundredths of a second. The first lap is about finishing. By the tenth you are working out where you lose two tenths on one corner, and that is the actual game.

Made by Kodub, who is open about being inspired by TrackMania. There is a track editor built in, so on top of the official courses there are thousands of community ones, which is why it does not run out.

Good for: obsessive improvement. Restarting is one key. Not good for: a relaxed five minutes. Controls: WASD or the arrow keys to drive, R or Enter to restart instantly.

Playing against real people: Smash Karts

Eight players, one arena, three minutes, and weapon boxes lying about. Most kills wins. It is barely a race and it is the best browser multiplayer car game by a clear distance, mostly because matches fill in seconds and nothing depends on having played before.

Made by Tall Team and still updated, with seasonal events around Halloween and Christmas. You level up and unlock characters, hats and kart parts, none of which make you faster.

Good for: playing with friends in the same room on separate machines. Not good for: anyone who wanted actual racing. There is no finish line. Controls: WASD or arrows to drive, spacebar to fire. On a phone, tap the item button.

Free roam: Madalin Stunt Cars 3

Around sixty cars unlocked from the start, three large maps built out of ramps, loops, tunnels and long runways, and nothing at all to complete. Pick a car, pick a map, do what you want. There are multiplayer rooms if you want other people in it.

Two honest warnings. It is desktop only, so there is no point opening it on a phone. And the developer, Madalin Games, states that the game is only meant to exist on their own three addresses, so copies elsewhere are builds they did not put there.

Good for: messing about with no goal, and the best-looking cars on this page. Not good for: phones, or anyone who needs a reason to be somewhere. Controls: WASD or arrows, space for the handbrake, F for nitro, C to change camera, R to respawn, T for the overhead map.

Driving with no score: Slow Roads

A road and a landscape are generated in front of you forever and you drive down it. No score, no timer, no opponents, no destination. You set the weather, the season and the time of day, choose a car, a motorbike or a coach, and go.

Made by one person, Anslo, who has said the browser version stays free and ad free. It is the most impressive-looking thing on this list and also the heaviest, so read the machine notes below before you decide it is broken.

Good for: having something on while you think about other things. There is an autodrive that steers for you. Not good for: anyone who needs a number to go up. Controls: WASD or arrows, shift to boost, space for the handbrake, R to get back on the road, C for camera, F for autodrive.

If you want to play with someone else

Three of these work with a friend, in different ways.

Same room, one keyboard: Crazy Cars on Poki has a splitscreen mode, which is the only true two-player option among the games here.

Same room, two machines: Smash Karts. Start a match and tell them the name you are using.

Rooms rather than matches: Madalin Stunt Cars 3 lets you join or host a lobby, which is closer to hanging about in the same place than to competing.

Which of these will actually run

On a phone: Drive Mad, Eggy Car, Smash Karts, PolyTrack and Drift Fever are all fine. Madalin Stunt Cars 3 is not on phones at all. Slow Roads has touch controls but wants a fairly recent phone to use them well.

On a trackpad with no mouse: Drive Mad and Eggy Car use two keys and nothing else, so they are the safe picks. Drift Fever uses one axis, so two arrow keys. Smash Karts and Madalin really want a proper keyboard.

On an older laptop: Drift Fever and Eggy Car are the lightest here by a long way. Drive Mad and PolyTrack are comfortably in the middle. Slow Roads and the Madalin maps are the heavy end, because both are full 3D running through the browser. Before writing Slow Roads off, open its settings and drop the graphics quality, because it starts higher than an old machine can manage.

Give the 3D ones a minute. Slow Roads, Madalin and anything built in Unity have to load a whole 3D engine into the tab before they show you anything. A blank screen for forty seconds is normal, not a failure.

Quick answers

Are all of these free? Yes. Every game linked on this page is free to play in a browser.

Do I need an account? No, apart from Smash Karts if you want your unlocks kept, and even then only for that.

Which one works best on a school Chromebook? Drift Fever and Eggy Car, because they are the smallest. Drive Mad and PolyTrack are usually fine too.

Which is the best two-player car game? Crazy Cars if you are sharing one keyboard, Smash Karts if you have a machine each.

Which of these has the most cars? Madalin Stunt Cars 3, with about sixty available immediately. Drift Hunters has twenty-six but you have to earn them, which for some people is the better version of the same thing.

What if a game will not load? Wait a minute for the 3D ones, then close other tabs and try again. If it still will not go, the machine is the limit and the lightest games above are the answer.
